Like who knows if we would even have Space engineers. I’m sure a lot of Indy titles would not be as well known or even exist if not for Steam. It also provides a distribution service for indy developers who might not be able to distribute their game otherwise, or get enough funding to support their development.

This gives advertising for smaller indy titles that would not otherwise be able to get the world out. If steam games could simply be downloaded and then transferred to any system it would make piracy extremely easy and none of the major developers would publish their games through steam and thus it would go out of business, not from lost sales to pirates but because they are essentially a retail store but wouldn’t have any goods to sell.īut steam also acts as an advertising site as well by prompting the items in their store that are new and on sale. It slowly morphed into what it is today as Steam became a digital distributer and needs to ensure the only people downloading the software are paying customer. It was started as a match making service for valve games to crack down on cheaters.
